WASHINGTON – The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) this week presented Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) with the Ukraine Democracy Award for her efforts in promoting a strong U.S. policy in support of Ukrainian independence during the seven-month-long crisis in Crimea.

“In this difficult time, I think there can be no prouder claim made than to say I stand with Ukraine,” said Maloney upon receiving the award. “I am touched and honored and remain committed to returning Ukraine to peace and prosperity. The friendship between America and Ukraine is strong and resilient. I stand with Ukraine, Congress stands with Ukraine, and President Obama stands with Ukraine.”

Maloney, whose district includes one of the largest Ukrainian Communities in the United States, held rallies and urged congressional action in response to the invasion of Crimea. Maloney is working to pass several bills to assist Ukraine, including:

  • H.R. 4278, the Ukraine Support Act;
  • H.R. 447, Supporting the democratic and European aspirations of the people of Ukraine, and their right to choose their own future free of intimidation and fear; and,
  • H.Res. 499, Condemning the violation of Ukrainian sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity by military forces of the Russian Federation.

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the representative organization of the Ukrainian American community, has been advocating the concerns of the Ukrainian American community since its founding in 1940.
