Israel and Jewish Issues

Legislation | Documents/Reports | Press Releases

Throughout my years in Congress, I have been a vocal supporter of a close relationship between the United States and Israel, which is our strong ally and the only real democracy in the Middle East. I have been proud to stand with my constituents to support Israel at rallies in my district, as well as on the floor of the House. Israel has withstood decades of attacks from its neighbors, and yet has managed to maintain a flourishing, free and open, multi-cultural society that is at the forefront of many technogical and medical breakthroughs.

I believe it is important to try to facilitate peace in the Middle East, working toward a two state solution that will result in a lasting peace, with secure borders for Israel. We should be using our diplomatic and development tools to encourage Palestinian leaders to recognize Israel as a Jewish State and end terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians. One of the first bills I passed was the Arab Boycott Arms Sales Prohibition Act to prohibit government-to-government and commercial arms sales to any country that is participating in or cooperating with the boycott of Israel by Arab countries.

Concerned about growing anti-semitism, I participated in an anti-Durban II conference and have spoken out against anti-semitic acts around the world.I passed a series of bills that opened sealed government files that had remained closed for more than 50 years after World War II. These files showed what the United States knew about war criminals, when we knew it, and details of our relationships with former war criminals from Nazi Germany and Japan. Recognizing the devastating impact of the Holocaust, I have also introduced legislation to encourage education about the Holocaust, and to assist survivors in gaining just compensation from a French railroad company that reaped economic benefits from sending thousands to their deaths.

Today we’re sending a message that Israel has our support as it defends itself and its people. Over the last few days, hundreds of missiles have fallen within Israel. Hamas is a terrorist organization – and they’re living up to that description – Israelis are literally living in terror. The targets aren’t military – they’re civilians. Schools, homes, day care centers, gas stations.

NEW YORK – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney today released the following statement regarding the murder of z"l Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrah: “Today we all join Israelis in mourning the deaths of Naftali Fraenkel, Gilad Shaar and Eyal Yifrah. Their deaths are a terrible reminder of the savage cruelty of terrorism. While we all hoped and prayed for their safe return, their deaths underscore the urgency with which we long for peace. Once again parents will return home without their sons; once again hope is replaced with sorrow; and once again a nation must mourn the senseless deaths of young men cut down too soon. I condemn the actions of the murderers in the strongest possible terms, and I am appalled by those who have celebrated their kidnapping and death.”

NEW YORK – Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12) today released the following statement on the Holocaust reparations negotiations between the French and United States governments.

“I welcome the news that the French are open to changing their Holocaust reparations program so that it covers more victims who were transported on SNCF trains during the Holocaust. These reparations are long overdue and the ongoing discussions are a positive step. That being said, I will continue working to pass the Holocaust Rail Justice Act and actively work against all contracts to SNCF or its subsidiaries until the issue is resolved and justice has been served.”

Feb 5, 2014 Press Release

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) today applauded new legislation introduced in the Maryland state legislature that would deny contracts to companies that were complicit in the Holocaust unless those companies have paid restitution to the victims. Maryland’s Department of Transportation recently announced that Keolis, a company which is majority-owned by Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF), has been selected to bid on the Purple Line rail extension project. The bill introduced by Maryland State Senator Joan Carter Conway (D-Baltimore) and Delegate Kirill Reznik (D-Montgomery County) would automatically deny the contract to Keolis and SNCF due to their collaboration with the Nazis and refusal to provide any restitution to victims.
