Rep. Maloney presses for action on comprehensive immigration reform bill

WASHINGTON, DC – On the Global Day of Action for immigration reform, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) called on the House majority to take up a comprehensive immigration reform bill, H.R. 15, the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act”  to fix our broken immigration system. Rep. Maloney is an original cosponsor of H.R. 15.

“Our immigration system is broken and everyone knows it,” Rep. Maloney said. “Back in June, the Senate acted in a responsible way – a bipartisan way – by passing commonsense reforms with a strong vote of 68 to 32.  Now the House must step up, pass a bill and get it into conference with the Senate. Comprehensive immigration reform will reduce our deficit, grow our economy, and honor our history as a nation of immigrants.”

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, enactment of the bipartisan Senate-passed comprehensive immigration reform bill would reduce the deficit by $850 billion.  CBO also estimates that the Senate-passed bill would increase economic growth by 3.3% in 2023 and 5.4% in 2033.

The only way immigration reform passes in the House is if Democrats and Republicans compromise.  H.R. 15 is a compromise bill that should attract bipartisan support. Its provisions include:

  • The bipartisan McCaul-Thompson border security bill that received unanimous approval from the House Homeland Security Committee.
  • The same provisions from the bipartisan Senate-passed bill that protect our workers, unite families, and offer hardworking immigrants an earned pathway to citizenship.
  • The same provisions from the bipartisan Senate-passed bill that reform our visa programs and our interior enforcement.
