Congressman John Tierney joined Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and local women leaders for a forum on the Women’s Economic Agenda in Beverly in August 2013.

For far too long, women have faced a myriad of discriminations; from higher health care premiums than men, to the near-constant threat to the right to choose.  Congressman Tierney has been a leader in the fight to keep women’s medical choices private, end violence against women, and strengthen policies that promote women’s health. As a cosponsor of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Reauthorization legislation, which was signed into law in March 2013, Congressman Tierney fought to protect all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The Affordable Care Act, which Congressman Tierney supported, ensures that being a woman cannot be treated as a pre-existing condition, provides free coverage for preventative health services for the estimated 47 million women with private health insurance, and ends the practice of charging women higher premiums than men for the same coverage.

But Congressman Tierney recognizes that the fight for equality does not end there. Women still too often earn less than men for doing comparable work, compounded by countless other economic factors that make it hard for women to get ahead in the workplace. He knows that when women can’t reach their full potential, our nation struggles. That’s why he is a champion of the House Democratic Caucus’s Women’s Economic Agenda – a group of policies designed to bolster women’s economic strength so that women and families can get ahead. By fighting for equal pay for equal work, paid leave that promotes work and family balance, and affordable childcare, Congressman Tierney continues to support economic policies that can unleash women’s economic power, and in turn, strengthen the American economy.
