Southern Maine receives Brownfield grants

$2 million will be used to help clean up polluted sites for redevelopment

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announced today that southern Maine communities would receive $2 million in Brownfield grants from the Environmental Protection Agency.

“These funds are critical to helping clean up polluted sites so they can be redeveloped for new uses. The projects chosen for funding show huge potential for creating new jobs and economic activity, while making communities healthier and safer places to live and work,” said Pingree.

Maine will receive a total of $3.8 million in grants, with $2 million in Pingree’s district.

  • Bath: $400,000 for hazardous material andpetroleum environmental assessment
  • Biddeford: $200,000 for cleaning up the former site of the Maine Energy Recovery Company (MERC) in the heart of downtown Biddeford
  • Kittery: $200,000 to remove hazardous substances on Wood Island, a former Navy and Coast Guard facility that will be redeveloped for community use
  • Lyman: $200,000 to clean up the site of the Lyman Cousens Memorial School, which has been vacant since 2007
  • Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission: $1,000,000 for a revolving loan fund for site cleanups throughout southern Main
