Michaud & Pingree Praise Senate Confirmation of Jon Levy for District Court Judge
04/30/14WASHINGTON, DC – Representatives Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree are praising the successful confirmation of Jon Levy of Maine to serve as District Court Judge in the District of Maine. Levy, who was confirmed by a Senate vote today, replaces the Honorable George Z. Singal, who has taken senior status.
“Jon Levy has served with distinction on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court for more than a decade, and possesses an extensive legal background that perfectly suits him for this appointment. We have no doubt that he will continue that honorable track record through hisservice on the District Court, and congratulate him on this deserved achievement,” said Reps. Michaud and Pingree in a joint statement.
Reps. Michaud and Pingree, along withSenator Angus King, forwarded Levy’s name to the White House for consideration last year following a screening process to fill the judicial vacancy. A bio of Levy, provided by the White House, is below.
Justice Jon David Levy has been an Associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court since 2002. Justice Levy previously served as a Maine District Court Judge from 1995 to 2002, during which time he served as Deputy Chief Judge from 2000 to 2001 and Chief Judge from 2001 to 2002. Prior to joining the bench, Justice Levy worked in private practice in York, Maine from 1983 to 1995. From 1981 to 1982, he was appointed by Judge William W. Justice to serve as a Special Court Monitor of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Justice Levy began his legal career by clerking for Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. of the United States District Court in the Southern District of West Virginia from 1979 to 1981. He received his J.D. in 1979 from the West Virginia University College of Law and his B.S. in 1976 from Syracuse University.
