Michigan U.S. Senator Carl Levin has introduced a resolution urging the Obama Administration to oppose a Canadian proposal to bury radioactive waste less than a mile from Lake Huron.

The resolution urges the President and Secretary of State to work with their counterparts to prevent a permanent nuclear waste repository from being built within the Great Lakes basin. State Representative Dan Kildee is sponsoring the same measure in the House.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., today introduced a Senate resolution [PDF] urging the administration to oppose a Canadian proposal to build a permanent nuclear waste repository in the Great Lakes Basin. The measure is a companion resolution to one introduced by Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint, earlier this month. The Senate resolution is co-sponsored by Sens. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.

Aboard the Appledore IV schooner on the Saginaw River, Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today announced a congressional resolution he will be introducing to protect Michigan’s Great Lakes from the threat of nuclear waste that Canada is proposing to permanently store underground less than a mile from Lake Huron.

The new congressional resolution “expresses the sense of the U.S. House of Representatives that the President and Secretary of State should ensure that the Canadian Government does not permanently store nuclear waste in the Great Lakes Basin.”

Standing at the helm of the tall ship Appledore IV, U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee said the schooner based in downtown Bay City was the "perfect" place to make a few points about protecting the Great Lakes from nuclear waste.

Kildee spoke during the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 28, addressing plans by Ontario Power Generation to build a storage facility for low- to intermediate-level nuclear waste at a proposed underground facility near Kincardine, Ontario.
