CHC ON H.R. 1726, TO AWARD “BORINQUENEERS” CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL

May 20, 2014 Issues: Civil Rights

Washington, DC-  Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15), and Members of the CHC released the following statement following yesterday's passage of H.R. 1726, a bipartisan bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Borinqueneers."  This unit served in the Korean War and was composed almost entirely of Puerto Rican soldiers.

"We are finally one step closer to bestowing upon the 65th Infantry the recognition they have long deserved.  The infantry unit was instrumental during the Korean War, fighting on the front lines and defending our country. We are deeply grateful to the Borinqueneers for their service, and look forward to soon honoring them with the Congressional Gold Medal," said CHC Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15).

“The Borinqueneers are legendary for their bravery, and this honor is overdue.  The men that comprised this regiment fought with valor in defense of our nation. They often came from humble backgrounds, but they all understood that they were fighting for something larger than themselves: they were fighting for the democratic ideals on which our nation is built.  And so today our nation said to the Borinqueneers that their service is appreciated and their trailblazing for all Latinos has been a source of pride and admiration,” said Congressman José E. Serrano (NY 15).

“To the Borinqueneers of the 65th Infantry Regiment, their loved ones, and to the Puerto Rican soldiers who have followed in their footsteps, I thank you for your proud service to this country.  Your sacrifice is just one more reason I am proud of my Puerto Rican heritage.  This recognition of their service and sacrifice is long overdue and I thank the authors, the Governor of Puerto Rico, and Puerto Ricans and veterans from Florida to New York, to Illinois to Colorado who have made sure the accomplishments of the Borinqueneers are preserved and celebrated,” said Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (IL-04).

“Puerto Ricans have a rich history of serving our nation’s military and the 65th Infantry exemplifies that service.  From World War II, to some of the most significant battles of the Korean War, to recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, these brave soldiers have distinguished themselves with courage and honor.  It is fitting Congress recognize them with this award,” said Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (NY- 07).

"We have been working shoulder-to-shoulder with an army of individuals and organizations from Puerto Rico and the states.  These advocates have been inspired by the legacy of the Regiment and are mindful of its special contribution to the tapestry of American life.  Their campaign on behalf of the Borinqueneers has been exceptional.  I want to publicly thank each and every one of them, because they are the heart and soul of this movement," said Congressman Pedro Pierluisi (PR).
