CHC CHAIRMAN RUBÉN HINOJOSA JOINS PRESIDENT OBAMA FOR "MY BROTHER'S KEEPER" INITIATIVE

Feb 27, 2014 Issues: Civil Rights

Washington, DC- Today, Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) Chairman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) joined President Barack Obama and public and private sector leaders for the launch of the "My Brother's Keeper" initiative.  This call to action will work as a partnership with foundations, businesses, and other stakeholders to secure investments and establish a presidential task force focused on helping young boys and men of color.

CHC Chairman Rubén Hinojosa released this statement following the initiative's unveiling:

"Building ladders of opportunity for young men of minority backgrounds is an issue that is both personal and pressing for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.  Many Members of the CHC overcame personal obstacles before entering the halls of Congress, and today, Members represent districts with large minority constituencies.

Young Latino men face high drop-out, incarceration and unemployment rates, and I thank President Obama for his efforts to help change this narrative.  The Congressional Hispanic Caucus looks forward to partnering with the White House on this new effort so that every single young man achieves his full potential."

With 82 percent of Latino boys reading below proficiency levels by the fourth grade, this new initiative will ensure that boys and young men of color have the education, training and support to succeed.  Learn more about President Obama's "My Brother's Keeper" initiative here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/my-brothers-keeper
