U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee says it was traumatic to learn that he had brain cancer and worse to come out of surgery unable to speak because of a stroke.
But the Tupelo Republican tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that his wife , Tori Nunnelee, kept him focused on counting his blessings.
It was Mrs. Nunnelee who realized during a phone conversation that doctors had missed something.
She was doing tornado relief work in Tupelo when Nunnelee was rushed to a Washington-area hospital with suspected heart problems. Their daughter told her that doctors hadn't found any heart problems and probably would release him.
Tori Nunnelee talked to her husband and noticed that his speech was slightly slurred. After that, she says, doctors did a CT scan and found the tumor.
