Rep. Brooks Asks Tough Questions About Sequestration
04/17/12Washington, D.C. – This afternoon Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), a member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, asked questions about the impact of the Budget Control Act sequestration measures on military preparedness. The hearing was held on the FY 2013 National Defense Budget Request for Atomic Energy Defense Activities and Nuclear Forces Programs.
Partial transcript:
Rep. Brooks: “What kind of impact will sequestration have… on our atomic energy defense activities and nuclear force programs and capabilities?”
Hon. Madelyn R. Creedon, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Strategic Affairs, U.S. Dept. of Defense: “That’s a very good question, and one frankly for which I don’t have an answer. The Secretary has been very clear that it would have a devastating effect and we have not looked at exactly how that would be spread across the various elements. I can only reiterate what the Secretary said…. I don’t know the answer to that question because we haven’t done the allocation.”
Rep. Brooks: “The sequestration is eight and a half months away. As I understand the President’s position, he has said that he would veto changes by Congress to that law. Are you not conducting any drills or do you not have any plans in place for when these cuts occur January 1, 2013, eight and a half months away?”
Hon. Creedon: “Sir I think the Secretary has addressed that in some of his hearings. From a policy perspective, I can tell you I have not been personally involved in anything. I think the Secretary has made it clear that at the topline that it would just be an extraordinarily devastating outcome. I don’t have an answer for you.”
