Feds award $600,000 to Catholic Charities in Syracuse to help homeless veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Catholic Charities of Onondaga County will receive $600,878 from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help homeless and at-risk veterans and their families find stable housing, U.S. Rep. Dan Maffei said today.

It is the second consecutive year that Catholic Charities has received a federal grant to help homeless veterans in Central New York. Last year, the organization received almost $600,000 to help about 200 local veterans.

Chris Curry, associate director of Catholic Charities of Onondaga County, said in an interview that the latest grant will allow the group to help about 150 local vets to find stable housing through Sept. 30, 2015.
The program provides a variety of services aimed at preventing homelessness, including temporary financial assistance and assistance in obtaining veterans benefits, Curry said.

Maffei, who helped advocate for the grant with the Department of Veterans Affairs, said, "We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for our freedom, and we have an obligation to provide them with the highest quality care possible."
