Wayne County schools get federal grants
September 30, 2014 LYONS — Four Wayne County school districts will use more than $800,000 in federal grant funding to improve safety and mental health services.
The awards — $723,000 from the Department of Education and $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services — were announced Friday. Lyons acted as lead agent for the grants, which it will split with North Rose-Wolcott, Clyde-Savannah and Sodus.
“We’re just constantly trying to find any funding possible,” Lyons Superintendent Denise Dzikowski said. “There are things that we’re not able to do within our own constraints of our budget.”
The grants are part of President Barack Obama’s “Now is the Time” initiative, an effort to reduce school violence that began after the shooting at Sandy Hook.
“These grants are a great win for our community,” Jay Roscup, project administrator for the Lyons school district, said in a press release. “This funding will support our efforts to build collaborative prevention and early intervention programs for our students. Too often, we wait until something is really wrong. With these grants, we can work together to intervene early and often and keep kids on track for success.”
Dzikowski said the funding will help the district give staff the tools to recognize when a student is in crisis and to respond.
“It’s about culture and climate,” she said. “In our district, we really want to make sure that our student population feels safe at all times. Of course, I’m not saying they’re not, but that there’s a pervasive sense that this is a safe place, and that the staff are very responsive to the needs of the students.”
U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced the grant in a joint press release with Rep. Dan Maffei, D-24 of Syracuse.
“We must do all that we can to prevent gun violence and help those suffering from mental illnesses get the help they need,” Maffei said in a press release. “It is critical that we increase access to mental health services and provide our local schools with resources to help make them safer. I am proud to support this federal funding.”
