Onondaga Community College gets $2.5 million job-training
September 30, 2014 Onondaga, N.Y. — The U.S. Department of Labor has approved a $2.5 million grant for Onondaga Community College to train workers for jobs in the agribusiness and food processing industry.
OCC will partner with employers, nonprofit organizations and the state to develop the training program, the department said.
"The nearly $2.5 million investment in this New York college announced today will help prepare local workers with the skills needed for in-demand careers and advance the role of community colleges as engines of economic growth," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez.
The funding for OCC is among $450 million in grants for community colleges around the country in the final round of the four-year, nearly $2 billion Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative. Colleges in New York have received $47 million of that funding.
A total of 71 federal grants announced today will support projects in at least 271 schools in every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. During the four years of the competition, more than 250 grants have been awarded, funding programs at nearly 700 of colleges.
The grants can be used to, among other things, hire or train instructors, develop new curricula and training models, purchase new equipment for students to train on, and solicit feedback from employers and design new programs based on their needs.
