Congresswoman Beatty to Participate in 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

Press Release

Beatty to Participate in 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington

(Washington, D.C.) – Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) will join individuals from around the nation to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.

Fifty years ago, civil rights leaders along with social justice activists and labor movement members assembled more than 250,000 people to organize the March on Washington to demand jobs, freedom, and equality under the law.  On Saturday, August 24, 2013, these same organizations will mobilize, once again, in Washington to continue pressing for economic empowerment and social justice and to celebrate the milestones that have been attained.

Congresswoman Beatty will join other Members of Congress, including Congressman John Lewis and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, as well as Reverends Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, the family of Trayvon Martin, and Martin Luther King, III,  as they march to the Lincoln Memorial to be addressed by the aforementioned individuals and other leaders of today’s civil rights movement.

“It is important for us to remember the sacrifices behind and the significance of the 1963 March on Washington. We must continue to pass this history, knowledge and activist spirit on to generations to come.  Although we have reached many milestones in our quest for equal rights and treatment, our work is not done.  Today, we are still fighting and advocating for social, economic, and education equality in our great nation.  We should never let Dr. King’s dream fade from our memories.”

Congresswoman Beatty may be reached for comment before and during the March.  Please feel free to contact her press staff at 614-404-8477.
