(Washington, D.C.) – Congresswoman Beatty (OH-03) released the following statement regarding her attendance at the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony in honor of the young girls killed at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963.

This upcoming Sunday will mark 50 years since the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama on September 15th, 1963 that killed Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley (the “Four Little Girls”). In honor of these young girls, a Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony was held today in Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

Later this week, Congresswoman Beatty, along with other members of Congress, will travel to Birmingham, Alabama to participate in forums, ceremonies, and events to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the bombing and to advocate for civil rights.

"Today, as we gather in Congress to pay tribute to the four young girls slain during the civil rights movement 50 years ago, we acknowledge the most noble and honorable sacrifice these innocent bystanders made. These children became the victims of a grievous and heinous crime against liberty and justice for all humanity.”

“May we remember them today as we celebrate their lives at the Gold Medal Ceremony. Let us continue to work towards progress and the emancipation of people in the Unites States and all over this world who long for equality, democracy, and freedom.”
