Congressman Holding Statement on U.S. Foreign Aid Hearing

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Holding issued a statement following the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on "The FY 2014 Budget Request: U.S. Foreign Assistance Priorities and Strategy”:

“Given our nation’s unsustainable debt crisis, we must make sure that if we are to provide aid, it is placed under a microscope and strategically deployed. We should have the highest standard for giving taxpayer dollars to other nations – factoring in whether a country shares our democratic ideals and whether it advances and protects U.S. economic and national security interests overseas.”

Background: Today, the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing to examine U.S. foreign assistance priorities and strategy. Testimony was heard from Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development and Daniel W. Yohannes, Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation. Together, these agencies account for 41 percent of the President’s $52 billion International Affairs Budget request.
