Congressman Holding Applauds Passage of the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, following passage of the "Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013", Congressman George Holding (NC-13) released a statement in support:

"As the Iranian regime continues its march towards a nuclear bomb, now is the time to increase pressure on Tehran. A nuclear-armed Iran is the gravest threat to the Middle East, our allies in the region, and our national security.

The bill passed by the House today broadens economic sanctions and further cuts the flow of funds necessary for Iran to continue their nuclear ambitions. It further targets Iran's energy sector- their primary source of funding - while also targeting Iran's foreign currency reserves. I am proud to have worked on this bill in the Foreign Affairs Committee and to join my colleagues today in supporting this important legislation. A nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable."

Background: H.R. 850, the "Nuclear Iran Prevention Act of 2013", was introduced by House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce (CA) and Ranking Member Elliot Engel (NY) on February 27, 2013. Congressman Holding is an original cosponsor of H.R. 850 which passed out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, of which he is a Member. H.R. 850 expands enforcement of current sanctions and broadens new economic sanctions to continue efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability. H.R. 850 passed the House on July 31, 2013 by a vote of 400 yeas to 20 nays.
