FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 29, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4) released the following statement to commemorate Labor Day, observed on September 1, 2014.

“On Labor Day we pay tribute to the millions of hardworking men and women who make America the land of opportunity for all. From factory floors to classrooms, the ingenuity and determination of our workforce continues to drive our economy and our country forward. I am particularly thankful for the power of organizing and the value of the Labor Movement in bringing us a minimum wage, safe workplaces, and retirement security.

“Labor Day is also an opportunity for us to reaffirm our commitment to jumpstarting the middle-class by creating good jobs so that all workers have the opportunity to realize the American Dream. Even as our economy continues to recover, too many Americans are still feeling the effects of the recession. Women have been especially impacted, which is why I support an economic agenda that ensures the economic security of women and families by providing equal pay for equal work, raising the minimum wage, guaranteeing paid sick leave, and improving access to affordable child care.  I know that 'When Women Succeed, America Succeeds.' When we unleash the power of women to participate fully in the economy, energize the manufacturing sector here at home, and secure an affordable world class education system for all, we will indeed jumpstart the middle class and those who aspire to join it.

“This Labor Day, and each day, let us stand together to support workers and families who are the backbone of the American economy.”
