Preventing Veteran Suicides: House Supports $20 Million Holt-Runyan Amendment

On an average day, 18 American veterans take their own lives.  In the last two years, we have lost more soldiers to suicide than to enemy fire.  These tragic deaths can be prevented – but only if veterans can access the trained, compassionate counseling they need and deserve.

Fortunately, the House has taken a step toward helping veterans reach out for help.  It recently passed language that I offered with my Republican colleague Jon Runyan that would set aside $20 million for veteran suicide prevention outreach.

You can find much more information about efforts to prevent veteran suicides on my website.  If you or a loved one is carrying a lingering burden of combat and it seems unbearable, please reach out now to 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

PROPERLY CARING FOR AND DISPOSING OF UNSERVICEABLE FLAGS

Another way that we can honor America’s soldiers and veterans is by properly caring for U.S. flags throughout their lifetime.  You may be familiar with the protocol for storing and displaying flags, but you may not know that the U.S. flag code also offers guidance on properly disposing of flags when they are tattered or no longer serviceable.

Perhaps you discovered on Memorial Day that you own a flag that is no longer suitable for display.  If so, please show respect for our flag and for the soldiers who defend it, and take it for proper disposal to many American Legion posts or to my office in West Winsdor:

            50 Washington Road
            West Windsor, New Jersey 08550

Sincerely,

Rush Holt
Member of Congress
