Crisis in Egypt

As we continue to closely follow the events in Egypt, the U.S. government must continue to articulate our basic principles. We should support the Egyptian people’s desire for democratic governance, and I share the President’s call for an orderly transition that must be meaningful, must be peaceful, and must begin now. We must not be on the wrong side of history.

We must strongly condemn any violence that threatens the legitimate, nonviolent protests expressing the aspirations of the Egyptian people. And we must protect the freedom of the press and fundamental human rights.

I remain involved with American citizens and New Jersey residents who are trying to return safely to the U.S. In the last week, I have helped families and student groups safely leave Egypt. The State Department has recommended that all U.S. citizens evacuate the country. If you know anyone who needs assistance leaving, they can call me at 1-87-RUSH-HOLT. I have also posted information and resources on my website.

Reminder: Small Business Tax Relief Workshop

On Monday, February 7 at 8:30 a.m, I will host a workshop at the Monroe Township Public Library to help small businesses take advantage of new tax benefits recently enacted into law.

On Wednesday, I toured Power Magnetics, a Trenton transformer and reactor manufacturer that provides custom magnetics solutions, and discussed with employees how the company has benefited from tax relief and how it is increasing its workforce. In recent years, Power Magnetics has grown in part by taking advantage of a tax credit to write off capital investments and new equipment purchases. Last year, I helped pass legislation to extend and expand the tax breaks for new equipment that have benefited companies like Power Magnetics. This is one example of the tax relief of which small businesses can take advantage.

To participate in the workshop, please email Matthew Hall, a member of my staff, at matthew.hall@mail.house.gov.

Supporting Home Energy Assistance

Recently, I was in Middlesex County, meeting with, community leaders and participants in Middlesex County of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to discuss the impact the program has had in New Jersey. LIHEAP provides federal assistance to low-income individuals who are struggling to pay their heating bills in these frigid temperatures. Last year, nearly 318,000 New Jersey families received an average of $339 in heating assistance. No family should have to make the choice between paying for a meal and paying to keep warm. And no children should shiver in their beds because their homes have no heat. This program truly makes a difference, and I’m pleased that New Jersey is receiving over $175 million in LIHEAP funding this year.

If you or your family needs assistance, I recommend you visit the New Jersey LIHEAP website or find your local Energy Assistance Agency here.
