Noel Ballard - Fellow

Two weeks after graduating from high school, Noel Ballard shipped off to recruit training with the U. S. Air Force, hoping to find structure and discipline that would help her mature before continuing her education.

She was ultimately trained as an Air Force Medic and served 7 months in Kuwait as part of Operation Enduring Freedom with the 375th Medical Group at Scott AFB, IL. In addition, Ballard participated in several  humanitarian missions while serving with the 3 Medical Operations Squadron in Alaska.

After her service, Ballard enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi. There, she learned that Congressman Steve Palazzo wanted to hire a wounded warrior to work in his district office. Ballard applied and was selected. She began her fellowship in June, 2013.

As a Veterans Case Worker in the Gulfport, MS district office, Ballard works with veterans and military personnel who need immediate assistance with various issues. Being able to draw on her experiences in military medicine has provided her with an advantage when tackling unresolved claims for medical benefits or disability compensation.

Ballard's biggest challenge, she says, is managing the emotional aspect of her job, but it can also yield some of the job's best rewards. Ballard says she draws great satisfaction when she resolves a problem or an issue for a veteran in need.
