CONGRESSMAN BISHOP ANNOUNCES $293,000 GRANT FOR NEIGHBORWORKS COLUMBUS

COLUMBUS, GA—Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) released the following statement announcing the awarding of a new $293,125 grant from the NeighborWorks national organization to assist NeighborWorks Columbus during the 2014 fiscal year. The funding is appropriated through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2014 and will support NeighborWorks Columbus in their efforts to revitalize and sustain communities, promote and preserve affordable housing options, and create and sustain jobs in Columbus, Georgia.

“I am very grateful for NeighborWorks’ willingness to invest in Columbus through the awarding of this significant grant,” said Congressman Bishop. “I commend NeighborWorks Columbus for their ongoing commitment to creating jobs and supporting the American Dream, and I look forward to viewing our communities grow due to their neighborly guardianship of the Greater Columbus area.”

“NeighborWorks Columbus’ mission is ‘to provide access to fit and affordable housing for all low to moderate income families’,” said Cathy Williams, President and CEO of NeighborWorks Columbus. “Our partnership with NeighborWorks America and the bi-partisan support from Congress is one of the tools we use to succeed in our mission. Congressman Bishop has been a supporter of our mission since we were founded in 1999. It is through that support that these funds will be used to help many families in Columbus.”

“We are very pleased to be receiving this allocation from NeighborWorks America,” said Tim Farmer, NeighborWorks Columbus Board Chair. “This is an example of how public/private/non-profit partnerships work to benefit our community. This funding will help our veterans, our low-to-moderate income families and our elderly with their housing needs.”

The NeighborWorks Columbus chapter is a part of the national, public nonprofit organization which supports and builds the capacity of over 240 local and regional nonprofit partner NeighborWorks organizations, comprised of local private-sector business leaders, local government representatives, and community residents. Established by Congress in 1978, NeighborWorks and the NeighborWorks network assisted almost 300,000 families and invested nearly $5.8 billion dollars in distressed communities during the 2013 fiscal year alone.
