Updated Information Regarding American Citizens Being Held in Haiti

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins received an update from the State Department regarding Topeka resident Drew Culberth and the nine other American citizens being detained in Haiti.
 
Congresswoman Jenkins sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton requesting additional information regarding the cases of Drew Culberth and the nine Americans being held in Haiti.
 
Today, Congresswoman Jenkins received word that their case has been forwarded to the higher court. According to the State Department, all ten Americans are all facing charges of Abduction, Trafficking of Minors and Organized Malfeasances.
 
The State Department staff in Haiti has been granted full consular access to Mr. Culberth and the nine other Americans and has attained local legal counsel for them. Additionally, the U.S. Consulate continues to provide them with food, water, bug spray and any necessary medical assistance.
 
Congresswoman Jenkins said, “I will continue to work with the State Department to ensure that Mr. Culberth and the other Americans are treated fairly and that this unfortunate situation is resolved as soon as possible.”
