Removal of Omnibus Spending Bill from Senate Floor Is a Win for All Americans

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins released the following statement after President Obama and Senate Democrats’ pork-filled ‘omnibus’ spending bill was pulled from the Senate floor:

“Democrats had more than 11 months to pass legislation that would responsibly fund the Federal Government, but rather than governing, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid attempted to end the 111th Congress in the same way they began it, by forcing a massive spending bill down the throats of the American people that will be paid for by our children and grandchildren.  The 1,924 page omnibus spending bill, which would have funded the Government for the remainder of the fiscal year, was little more than one last desperate attempt by the Democrat majority to sneak through the kind of pork barrel projects that got them thrown from office this November.  In its place Congress will now take up a short term continuing resolution, which will allow the next Congress, led by the Republican house majority, to chart a fiscally responsible path for the Federal government.

“When I was elected to Congress, Eastern Kansans knew that wasteful earmarks, runaway government spending, and the same tired notion that we are going to spend our way out of debt were leading this country down the wrong path.  I think we saw on election night that the rest of the country has made the same realization. I am very happy that the Senate has recognized the will of the American people and pulled this bill from the floor.   It is my sincere hope that the next Congress will keep up the fight and stand by their pledge to refuse to consider any bill which includes earmarks and wasteful, unnecessary government spending.”
