Jenkins Supports Amendment to Block Federal Funding for Abortion

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins released the following statement after supporting an amendment to H.R. 3962, Speaker Pelosi’s health care bill, offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI).  The amendment sought to prohibit federal dollars from being used to fund abortions in the new government funded "public option." The amendment passed by a vote of 240-194.

“I voted for the Stupak-Pitts Amendment because I am opposed to public funding for abortion. Federal funding of abortions has been prohibited since 1977 when the Hyde Amendment became law and it should not be undone now.  Folks all across the country have strong moral objections to abortion and forcing them to pay taxes to fund abortion is indefensible. I am pleased this body was able to stop Speaker Pelosi’s attempt to reverse federal law and successfully correct one element of this fatally flawed legislation.”
