Jenkins Signs Petition to Repeal Health Care Law

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins issued the following statement after signing a petition in the House of Representatives to allow a vote on legislation to repeal the Democrat’s government takeover of health care.

“There is no doubt that the health care system in our nation needs reformed, but the new law is not the right prescription for what is ailing our health care system. That is why I support H.R. 4972, legislation to repeal the misguided bill and why I signed a petition to force a vote on H.R. 4972. The American people do not want a government takeover of health care, and with a $13 trillion nation debt, we simply cannot afford this massive plan.

“Rather than bringing down health care costs for all Americans, helping small businesses provide health care for their employees and preserving Medicare for our nation’s seniors, the new law will result in higher premiums for families, costly mandates and job-killing taxes, and more than $520 billion in cuts to Medicare. Kansans and all Americans deserve much better, and I will continue working to repeal the harmful provisions in the misguided law and to replace them with something better.”

According to House of Representatives rules, after a bill has been introduced and referred to a committee for 30 legislative days, any member may file a motion with the Clerk of the House to discharge the committee from further consideration of the bill. If a majority of total member of the House (218 members) signs the discharge petition, the House will hold a vote on the motion to discharge. If the motion to discharge is adopted, the House will immediately consider the underlying bill.
