Jenkins Promotes 529 College Saving Legislation on 5/29

WASHINGTON - In February 2011, Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) and Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) introduced H.R. 529, legislation that will help encourage low and moderate-income families to take advantage of 529 plans to help save for college.  This bi-partisan bill establishes a modest new employer-matching program, allows 529 funds to pay for computers, an essential tool for today’s college students, and provides greater flexibility to manage 529 investments.  Today, May 29th, or 529 Day, Congresswoman Jenkins released the following statement in support of H.R. 529:

“The first priority of this Congress must be getting Americans back to work, and in the 21st Century job market, this will often require a college degree.  H.R. 529 is a bi-partisan, commonsense step in making higher education a real choice for all Americans.  Saving for our children’s college education is one of the most important, and at times, most difficult aspects of being a parent.  This legislation will make the college savings process easier for everyone.

“Today is 529 day, and thousands of recent college graduates are preparing to enter the workforce with massive amounts of student loan debt already weighing them down.  It is my hope that, today of all days, Congress will reflect on the preventative measures we can take to help families avoid some of this debt and quickly act to pass H.R. 529.”
