Jenkins Introduces Legislation to Improve Rural Hospital Quality and Access

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) introduced the Medicare Access to Rural Anesthesiology Act in to the 112th Congress.

Throughout the nation, rural hospitals are experiencing a shortage of access to anesthesiology medical care.  To help address this problem, this legislation allows certain rural hospitals to use Medicare Part A funds to pay for the services of anesthesiologists.

Congresswoman Jenkins released the following statement after introducing the Medicare Access to Rural Anesthesiology Act:

“I am proud to introduce this bipartisan legislation that provides our rural hospitals with greater access to anesthesiology professionals.  Access to care in rural communities is always a concern. Any cost-effective strategy to incentivize physicians to practice in these areas will continue to be a priority of mine.”

“Last Congress, the President’s health care legislation not only failed to reduce the costs of health care, but left much to be desired when it came to expanding access and increasing the quality of care in our rural communities.  As we continue the repeal and replacement of the Obamacare package I hope this legislation will be taken up as one method of improving health care for rural Americans.”
