Jenkins: Fixing Our Broken Tax Code Is The Single Most Important Thing We Can Do To Make Our Economy Stronger

WASHINGTON, D.C.–At the weekly press conference with Republican leaders Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) discussed how tax reform isn’t glamorous, but fixing our broken tax code is the single most important thing we can do to make our economy stronger. Congresswoman Jenkins also noted legislation this week that will immediately create certainty and tax relief for small businesses.

Following are Congresswoman Jenkins remarks:

“Fixing our broken tax code is the single most important thing we can do, right now, to make our economy stronger and more secure.

“Tax reform isn’t glamorous. Tax reform doesn’t turn out hundreds for a political rally. Yet any family, individual or small business that has filed a tax return or forced to file for an extension in April knows our tax code is an outright mess.

“The complexity in our tax code is the result of years of loading it up with politically motivated credits, deductions, and exemptions that only further inhibit growth to keep higher rates for everyone else. Further complicating matters, Washington’s constant tinkering with the tax code, especially through temporary tax provisions, gives the small businesses I talk with extreme uncertainty and has made it harder for them to plan, invest, and even hire.

“As the Ways and Means committee continues our open discussion on Chairman Camp’s draft, I’m pleased the House will address key provisions this week that can immediately provide certainty and tax relief for small businesses. It is our hope this will move us towards a full overhaul of the tax code – maybe even a tax reform rally – to build an America that works.”
