Jenkins: Delaying Six-Month Report on Guantanamo Bay is Proof There is No Plan

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins issued the following statement after the Administration delayed the six-month report as required by President Obama’s Executive Order to close the Detention Facility at Guantanamo Bay by January 2010.

“There was no comprehensive plan for closing Guantanamo Bay when the President signed the Executive Order in January, and the delay of the required six-month report is further proof that there is still no plan. After having visited both Guantanamo Bay and Fort Leavenworth, I am more convinced than ever that Fort Leavenworth is the absolute wrong place to relocate even one detainee and that there is no better place to hold these dangerous terrorist suspects than at the state-of-the-art facility that already exists at Guantanamo Bay.

“The Administration must come forward with a comprehensive plan that does not jeopardize the safety of the American people. Closing Guantanamo Bay is a complex issue, but moving forward without a plan to relocate the terrorist detainees is irresponsible.”

Congresswoman Jenkins introduced H.R. 148 to block any federal funds from being used to transfer detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. She is also a cosponsor of H.R. 2294, the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act, which would require the Administration to obtain approval from the governor and state legislature of any state where the President intends to relocate detainees and to notify Congress of any relocation or transfer of terrorist suspects.
