Jenkins: Congress Needs a Real Time Reminder of Our Growing National Debt

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins released the following statement after cosponsoring H. Res. 228, which would direct the Clerk of the House of Representatives to place a real time display of the United States gross national debt in the House Chamber:

“There is a lot of talk around this town about our national debt, but the serious reality of our growing debt problem is often lost in Washington’s political games and incendiary rhetoric.  Our national debt has topped $14,000,000,000,000, that is a staggering number, and every dime of it is going to have to be repaid by our children and grandchildren.  This is why I have cosponsored a bill which will require a real time display of our country’s gross national debt be placed in the House Chamber.”

“The votes taken in that room have a real time effect on our national debt and a long lasting effect on our children and grandchildren, so it is fitting that before casting those votes Members of Congress are reminded of the reality of our $14 trillion national debt.”
