Jenkins Congratulates Topeka for Winning National Energy Efficiency Award

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins congratulates the City of Topeka Department of Housing and Neighborhood Development for being named as a recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2009 ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence.

“The Department of Housing and Neighborhood Development in the City of Topeka has made great efforts to promote energy-efficient homes, and their innovative work is evident as they were selected out of the 12,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program,” Jenkins said. “As we continue to grow our energy independence here at home, it is important that we focus on an all-of-the-above approach, and the folks in Topeka have been active in moving us in that direction. I congratulate the City of Topeka for being a leader in energy efficient housing.”

Since 2007, Topeka has funded construction of more than ten ENERGY STAR affordable housing units and has hosted education events for building contractors and the public. Additionally, the Mayor of Topeka proclaimed October 2008 as ENERGY STAR Awareness Month.
