Jenkins Congratulates South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad for Securing Grant to Repair Gorilla Subdivision

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins congratulates the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad (SKOL) for securing a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) grant to repair flood damage to the Gorilla Subdivision section of the railroad between Sherwin, Kan. and Cherokee, Kan.

“The Gorilla Subdivision is an extremely important section of the SKOL, allowing large amounts of freight to move from Kansas City to the Gulf of Mexico,” Jenkins said. “After the Gorilla Subdivision was severely damaged from excessive rainfalls over the past two summers, I was glad to play a role in helping SKOL secure competitive grant funds.”

SKOL will receive $405,702 through the FRA’s Railroad Rehabilitation and Repair Program to make emergency repairs to 13.6 miles of the line. The grant will assist SKOL make critical repairs to the 90 year-old line as well as enable it to handle heavier rail in the future.

Jenkins continued, “I congratulate the folks at SKOL for securing this grant. Freight railroads are critical to the Kansas economy, and this grant will allow SKOL to keep trains running through Southeast Kansas.”
