Jenkins: Card Check Takes Away Workers' Rights

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins made the following statement after the Employee Free Choice Act was introduced in the House of Representatives.

“Workers should absolutely have the right to join a union, but that decision should be private. The Employee Free Choice Act would remove the secret ballot requirement and allow union certification based on simple card-check. Taking away the right to a secret ballot opens the door to intimidation and coercion by union leaders, employers and other employees, and that is the exact opposite of what our government should support.

“I am proud to be a co-sponsor of the Secret Ballot Protection Act, which protects the right of workers to decide privately to join a union or not. The right to a secret ballot is vital to our democratic society, and our workers also deserve that right.”
