Jenkins and a Bi-Partisan Majority Reject President's Debt Limit Increase

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins released the following statement after voting against H.R. 1954, which would have raised the debt limit without spending cuts or reforms.  This debt limit extension failed to pass the House, defeated by a vote of 97 to 318, with 7 members voting present.

“Over the last few months, the Obama Administration and more than half of House Democrats requested a vote on an extension of the debt limit without any spending cuts or reforms.  Today in the spirit of transparency we honored this request, and the President’s debt limit extension was defeated by a bi-partisan opposition.  As I travel throughout Eastern Kansas, folks tell me they are fed up with Washington's spending driven debt crisis and they are opposed to extending Washington's credit limit without substantial spending cuts and reforms that place us on a path to financial responsibility.”

“I am hopeful that this vote will show the President, Secretary Geithner and House Democrats that the notion of a debt limit extension without cuts and reforms is unreasonable and out of step with the American people.  We are in a debt crisis because Washington spends too much, and going forward I hope we can work together to make the substantial reforms and cuts needed to dig ourselves out of this hole.”
