WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) voted for the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act to direct funding for critical medical research and advancements to fight pediatric diseases like childhood cancer by eliminating the taxpayer subsidy of political party conventions. This bill passed the House with a bipartisan vote of 295 - 103. Congresswoman Jenkins released the following statement:

“Stop talking; start doing. This is what Gabriella Miller, a passionate childhood cancer advocate, asked of our nation’s leaders. As an original cosponsor of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act, I was very proud to support this legislation.

“Although Gabriella lost her battle to brain cancer in October, this bill supports programs that will find cures for the brave kids like her and pay for that research by redirecting federal taxpayer dollars away from partisan political conventions.”

This bill is cost-neutral and creates a new 10-year pediatric research initiative at the National Institutes of Health. This funding could support efforts at institutions like the University of Kansas Medical Center, which is making great strides in the fight against pediatric illnesses, including plans for a pediatric blood cancer program, research to prevent severe behavior disorders in children, and efforts to establish an Institute for Children’s Health and Development.
