WASHINGTON—The U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 624, the “Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act of 2013” (CISPA) today by a vote of 288-127. Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins released the following statement about her support for the bill:

“Foreign countries such as China and Iran are already conducting massive cyber attacks and espionage campaigns against the United States. While these attacks pose a grave national security threat, they also cost American jobs in terms of stolen trade secrets, and are a current threat to privacy through stolen consumer data. CISPA is an important step towards protecting the U.S. economy and strengthening our nation’s ability to defend American networks and data, all while protecting Americans’ privacy and civil liberties.

“Privacy and security can be prioritized and protected together equally. The privacy protections added to the bill included important oversight mechanisms to ensure the bill’s authorities are always used properly. This legislation also protects the use of cyber threat information by limiting the use by both the government and the private sector for cybersecurity purposes only. This bill does not include an exception for the government to use information for ‘national security’ purposes.”
