Congresswoman Jenkins Supports Bill to Avoid Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON—Today, House Republican Conference Vice Chair Lynn Jenkins supported H.R. 933, the FY 2013 Department of Defense, Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, and Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act (CR), which passed the U.S. House of Representatives with a vote of 267-151. Congresswoman Jenkins released the following statement after the vote:

“Today, I voted to take the possibility of a government shutdown off the table and allow Congress to continue to fund government programs through September 30, as the House continues to work on a responsible budget to address our nation’s wasteful spending habits and looming debt crisis. The bill specifically addresses the sequester and minimizes furlough effects by providing the Department of Defense greater flexibility to meet the needs of troops and their families, and focus on funding the most strategic and critical programs essential to our national security. This bill also protects and takes care of our veterans by providing advance funding for veterans’ medical benefits that is balanced by decreases in military construction funding.

“I am committed to fighting wasteful and unnecessary spending, and this bill will require every federal agency to provide spending plans to Congress to ensure transparency and the proper use of taxpayer dollars. Continuing to fund empty federal buildings, programs set for termination, and extravagant conferences for federal bureaucrats is intolerable and offensive to hardworking Americans who continue to struggle in this weak economy.”
