Congresswoman Jenkins Statement on Vote to Avoid Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON – Today Congress will vote to continue funding the federal government for the first six months of 2013. Congresswoman Jenkins spoke on the House floor today about the importance of dealing with our long-term debt problem and released the following statement on the vote:

“Today’s vote to continue to fund the government temporarily is a perfect example of why this country is $16 trillion in debt. It’s a symptom of the debilitating disease of a broken budget process. The House has passed a budget, but the Senate has not passed one in three years. That is just plain irresponsible.

“Enough with the short-term budget fixes, patches, gimmicks and tricks. They only delay problems or make them worse. This country needs comprehensive budget and tax reform. This means a simpler tax code that is more fair and efficient and fundamental spending reform that will save Medicare. We must seize this rare opportunity to put our nation back on the right path—to ensure a more prosperous future for our children. It’s time to put the American people first.”
