I voted against H.R. 5759 because, although I strongly believe that it is unconstitutional to have immigration policy made by executive orders and without the consent of Congress, this legislation will only mislead the American people into believing that we are taking care of the problem when the only way to address President Obama's overreach is either through the U.S. Supreme Court or through the appropriation's process.

(Washington, D.C.) The trend of this White House politicizing immigration continues. President Obama wants a partisan political wedge issue, not meaningful, sensible, compassionate immigration reform. The president's unilateral actions will make it harder for congress to fix the immigration system, and the worst part is - that seems to be exactly his intention.

Shutting down the government is not an option.  I will be looking into what other options are available that would force the President to negotiate with Congress on immigration reform next year.

"We have a humanitarian crisis at our border that has been caused by U.S. policies that have been encouraging Central American parents to send their children on a dangerous journey to the U.S. border with Mexico and I voted for the supplemental appropriation to keep this situation from getting worse."

People who help refugees in Colorado are concerned that their program funding may be diverted to help the unaccompanied children coming over the border, and the refugee community is taking action by visiting local politicians to lobby for their cause.

House Republicans are so wary of overhauling the nation’s immigration laws this year that only five are cosponsoring Rep. Mike Coffman’s bill to provide a path to citizenship for illegal aliens who serve in the U.S. military.

“I think the GOP is still very cautious of doing anything on the issue,” said one Republican official.
