Representative Bradley Byrne

Representing the 1st District of Alabama

Economy and Jobs

For too long, we have been content to sit back and nibble around the edges of the issues weighing down our economy. The result is a stagnant recovery where unemployment is still far too high, new investment and jobs are leaving the country, and many are still struggling to find work. I refuse to accept this version of America as ‘the new normal.’ It’s time for bold action. What the country needs now more than ever are leaders that are willing to plant the flag for bold ideas that will move our country forward and put Americans back to work. Obvious ways to improve our economy include approving the Keystone XL pipeline, ending the Administration’s ‘War on Coal,’ providing regulatory relief to business, and improving access to capital. These are common-sense proposals, many with bipartisan support that deserve action today.

You can find a complete lisitng of House-passed jobs bills which are awaiting action in the Senate here.

The next two years are shaping up to be very interesting on Capitol Hill.  As you have probably heard by now, for the first time since 2006, Republicans will control both the United States House of Representatives and the Senate.

On Election Day, voters across the country went to the polls and elected the largest Republican majority in the House since Harry Truman was President. In the Senate, Republicans have already captured eight new seats.

The elections are now over, and it’s time to get down to governing.

It’s called the “Lame Duck,” but the last two months of the 113th Congress are shaping up to be anything but “lame.” Important issues ranging from national security to funding the government must be addressed before the start of the new year.

You may have seen some good news recently. The September jobs report for the United States showed the unemployment rate dropping to 5.9% with 248,000 new jobs being added. That’s the lowest unemployment rate in a year.

The problem is, if you look closer at the numbers, you will find that our economic recovery is still falling flat. The topline numbers don’t tell the whole story. Consider this: 9.1 million Americans are still looking for work. Clearly, the current economic policies aren’t working.

As college football season rolls around, people are starting to show their school pride. From the Crimson Tide to the Auburn Tigers to our newest team, the South Alabama Jaguars, there is a lot of excitement over football season. But is there the same level of excitement for what is happening in our college classrooms?

In lower Alabama, we are blessed with many great institutions of higher learning. Mobile is home to the University of South Alabama, Spring Hill College, and the University of Mobile. We also have Columbia Southern, an online university based in Orange Beach.

As you have probably heard me say before, I believe one of the most important parts of my job is to help make Southwest Alabama a better place for businesses to locate. My family has called this area home for over two centuries, and seeing our area grow and prosper is personal to me.
