WASHINGTON - Today Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-SF), a senior Member of the Labor-Health and Human Services-Education Appropriations Subcommittee announced three U.S. Department of Education grants for San Francisco.
"We thank the Department of Education for recognizing the needs of our community. This investment will help educate our children and improve their long term academic achievement,” Pelosi said. The following grants were awarded:
The grant was awarded under the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program and will emphasize increased academic achievement, reduced incidents of drug and violence among students, support for student transitions between grades, and increased parental involvement by improving literacy and vocational schools.
The Office of Research at San Francisco State University was selected to receive funding under the Minority Institutions Program. The funding will address the shortages in qualified speech language pathologists and special educators with training on augmentative and alternative communication.
This grant was awarded to the Learning and Instruction Department at the University of San Francisco to target minority individuals for higher education, increase the number of doctoral level personnel, train teachers to serve culturally and linguistically diverse children, and conduct research in urban multicultural education.
