CBC Chair Marcia L. Fudge's Statement on the Passing of Dr. Maya Angelou

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) released the following statement on the death of Dr. Maya Angelou:

"Today, we mourn the passing of one of the greatest artists and intellectuals of our time. Dr. Maya Angelou was more than a writer, and more than an entertainer; Dr. Angelou was an extraordinary leader who realized how powerful sharing her words could be in helping us become better individuals and in moving our world towards becoming more humane.

"With her words and through her art, Dr. Angelou narrated the tragedies and triumphs of her own life against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Angelou was a friend and advisor to many of our nation’s greatest civil rights pioneers, who in the face of often violent opposition, were inspired by her to lead with humility and courage, and to fight for equality under the law with the utmost dignity and grace.

"Dr. Angelou's elegance and wisdom also allowed her to transcend the boundaries of race, gender and time. Throughout her life, she moved millions around the world towards having greater respect for our differences and deeper compassion for our unique experiences.

"Though Dr. Angelou is physically no longer with us, her spirit and her work will live forever. We will miss her dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Angelou's family and friends during this very difficult time."
