CHILTON COUNTY
Chilton County, which is renown for its peach crop, was created on December 30, 1868 by the Alabama legislature from land originally in Autauga, Bibb, Perry, and Shelby counties. First named Baker County, it was renamed Chilton in honor of Chief Justice William Parish Chilton on December 17, 1874. Chilton County's population was 43,643 in the 2010 census. The county seat is located in Clanton.
Chilton County is covered with as many as 10,000 acres of peach orchards. It is believed that explorer Hernando DeSoto first brought peaches to Chilton County in the 1500s in his travels down the Coosa River. Each June, the Chilton County Peach Festival is held to promote the local peach industry. The festival is a week-long celebration that includes the Peach Pageant, the Peach Art Show, the Peach Parade, and the Peach Auction. The 50th anniversary of the festival was in 1997.
