Paulsen Statement on New Defense Department Sexual Assault Guidelines

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Erik Paulsen (MN-03) released the following statement regarding the new measures announced by the Department of Defense aimed at combating sexual assault in the U.S. military. In June, legislation (H.R. 1864) Rep. Paulsen co-sponsored to strengthen assault prevention and whistleblower protections for victims of sexual assault in the U.S. military passed the House with strong bipartisan support.

“Today’s announcement by Defense Secretary Hagel is welcome news as we work to change our military’s culture of inaction when addressing sexual assaults.” said Rep. Paulsen. “Increasing support for assault victims, expanding chain of command oversight, and instituting a systematic review of sexual assault investigations are all pivotal steps towards ensuring sexual assault is not tolerated and not ignored in our nation’s military.”

The new measures include creation of a new legal advocacy program to provide assistance to victims in sexual assault litigation. READ the Defense Secretary’s memo here
