Paulsen: It’s Time for Action to End Sex Trafficking

Ways and Means Committee Releases Draft Proposal to Address Child Sex Trafficking; Action Expected this Month

Washington, D.C. – The House Ways and Means Committee recently released draft legislation to prevent and address sex trafficking of youth in foster care which includes provisions championed by Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03). This legislation would ensure youth in foster care have the same opportunities and experiences as other children, while also providing them with more tools they need to become successful adults.  

“It’s time to recognize the terrible reality of sex trafficking in our communities,” said Congressman Paulsen. “The fact is there are steps that can be taken to combat this growing problem and help shepherd victims out of the shadows.”

The draft legislation was developed based on testimony given by Congressman Erik Paulsen at a Human Resources Subcommittee hearing in October, as well as other legislation introduced by Republican and Democrat Members of Congress. The draft legislation would: 

1. Require states to develop procedures for identifying victims of child sex trafficking and for determining the appropriate services for the child;

2. Improve data on child sex trafficking and children living in group homes who are the most at risk of being trafficked;

3. Help youth in foster care lead more normal lives to deter sex trafficking;

4. Ensure states do more to quickly move kids out of foster care; and

5. Help youth in foster care better prepare for a successful adulthood.

Congressman Erik Paulsen (MN-03) and Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-04) introduced bipartisan legislation in November to combat sex trafficking in American communities. The Stop Exploitation Through Trafficking Act gives law enforcement the tools they need to turn the tide against sex trafficking in U.S. communities and help victims of these horrific crimes receive the support they need and deserve.

In July, Congressman Paulsen introduced the Child Sex Trafficking Data and Response Act with Congresswoman Slaughter (D-NY). The bill improves data systems that track missing children as well as provides proper designation to ensure victims receive the care and help they need.
