Erik's Correspondence Corner: Cyber Security & Seniors Initiatives

Washington, D.C. – In his continuing effort to keep the lines of communication open with constituents, Rep. Erik Paulsen (MN-03) took time on Friday to answer questions from Anne in Wayzata and Keith in Bloomington.

This week, the House of Representatives took up legislation aimed at providing American companies with voluntary access to the tools they may need to confront the growing threat of Chinese and Russian cyber intrusion. Rep. Paulsen heard from many of his neighbors regarding this important issue. Anne in Wayzata wrote in with her concerns regarding the cyber security bill which passed the House on Thursday. Also this week, Keith from Bloomington called in asking what initiatives Rep. Paulsen was working on to help seniors in our community.

Each week, Representative Paulsen receives thousands of letters, emails, tweets, Facebook posts, and phone calls from constituents voicing their opinions. Through this video series, Representative Paulsen will regularly respond to constituent correspondence on a variety of topics.

On Cyber Security:

“Let me state very clearly, I am 100% behind protecting individual privacy rights. The language in the bill ensures that this is a purely voluntary effort to allow companies that have had their network systems hacked into to ask the government for assistance.”

“It does not allow any sharing of emails, or personal information, or personal disclosure. The bill was worked on in a very bipartisan way, with not only stakeholder groups of technology companies, businesses, and trade organization, but also constitutional scholars and civil liberties advocates as well.”

On Seniors Initiatives:

“We were in Bloomington last week, where I joined Representative Betty McCollum in highlighting our legislation that will allow the freeing up of red tape or bureaucracy to make sure that non-profit organizations like Store To Door - who we did deliveries with – can now use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds for these seniors who are unable to get to the grocery store themselves.”

“I had a chance to actually deliver a some groceries to a handful of seniors myself. It’s a great opportunity to help seniors. It’s bipartisanly supported. Hope we’re going to move this though as well.”
