Markey, Blumenthal Assail Takata Rejection of Nationwide Airbag Recall
WASHINGTON (December 3, 2014) – Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) today released the following statement after the airbag manufacturer Takata rejected the move by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall nationwide the company’s faulty driver’s side airbags.
“Takata is right now risking more lives by rejecting this nationwide recall, and the company must be held to account. NHTSA and automakers should do whatever they can to force this company to comply, and expand this recall to include the passenger-side airbags that could also kill or maim Americans.
“Today we will hear from the Obama administration’s new nominee to be the head of NHTSA. We need to hear how our auto safety watchdogs will ensure Takata and every single automaker will comply with this nationwide recall, and how NHTSA can protect more of our families and friends from deadly airbags.”
