Congresswoman Cheri Bustos Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Oct 2, 2014
Press Release

Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) issued the following statement in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is acknowledged each October:

“Fighting for the people of our region is my top priority, and that starts with making sure our communities stay safe places to live, work and raise families. As a mother and former investigative reporter, I uncovered shocking stories of child abuse that made me realize the importance of giving law enforcement officials the resources they need to keep families safe. I am committed to eradicating this devastating crime and ensuring that no one, man or woman, should live in danger and fear of domestic violence.”

Last week, Bustos announced a $91,000 grant to support victims of domestic violence in Winnebago County.

Earlier in September, Bustos recognized the 20th Anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), landmark legislation that has helped ensure women have access to protections and resources related to domestic violence, by volunteering at local domestic violence centers.

Bustos voted to reauthorize and strengthen VAWA last year.
